Statement of Significance:
An early surviving example of a very substantial railway station building. It is of considerable architectural importance, is a landmark and forms an integral and essential part of the historic townscape of Ballarat. A notable design in the conservative Classical manner, the building is distinguished by its elevated pedimented portico, clock tower and arcade and by the enclosed platform shed, which is very uncommon and is distinctively detailed.

Description:
Railway Station, Lydiard Street North, Ballarat, is a stuccoed complex comprising a platform shed built in 1862 and the entrance building dating from 1877-89. The platform shed features broken pedimented gables with Tuscan pilasters about the elliptical arched train entrance. Gabled pavilions at each end terminate arcaded main facade, faced Tuscan pilasters and entablature. Central dome roofed tower behind Ionic tetrastyle, prostyle portico, rusticated base.

Condition and Integrity:
Railway Station, Lydiard Street North, Ballarat, is substantially intact and in fair to good condition, if in a somewhat neglected state. Various alterations have been made internally and externally.
